The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the killing of about 170 people in Kwara State, blaming the tragedy on what it described as a grave failure of security under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the massacre in Kaiama Local Government Area exposed the ineffectiveness of the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
The ADC questioned the impact of President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on security in November 2025, as well as his pledge to recruit thousands of police officers, noting that continued mass killings suggest the measures were either ineffective or never fully implemented.
“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemns in the strongest possible terms the recent gruesome killing of about 170 innocent Nigerians in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State. This horrific massacre is one of the worst atrocities recorded in recent times,” the statement said.
The party also raised concerns that the surge in security activities witnessed last year may have been more about optics than genuine protection of citizens, especially in the wake of comments by the President of the United States.
According to the ADC, the pattern of attacks nationwide shows that violence is not being curtailed but merely shifting from one region to another.
It warned that the killings in Kwara and mass abductions in Kaduna point to deeper failures in intelligence gathering, border control, inter-agency collaboration and emergency response.
The party called on the Federal Government to be transparent about the true state of security, clarify the status of the promised police recruitment, and outline concrete steps to prevent armed groups from moving freely across states.
The ADC added that any government unable to protect the lives of its citizens has failed in its most fundamental duty, stressing that Nigerians deserve decisive action, not condolences after every tragedy.
