Thirteen Local Government Chairmen in Nasarawa State have thrown their weight behind the embattled All Progressives Congress (APC) State Chairman, Aliyu Bello, amid an ongoing internal suspension controversy threatening to deepen cracks within the party.
The show of support comes days after a faction within the state chapter of the APC reportedly announced Bello’s suspension over alleged misconduct and anti-party activities — claims his loyalists have firmly rejected.
In a joint statement released in Lafia on Wednesday, the council chairmen dismissed the suspension as “unconstitutional and politically motivated,” insisting it did not follow due process and lacked the endorsement of the party’s recognized structures.
“We, the undersigned chairmen of the 13 local government areas in Nasarawa, reaffirm our confidence in the leadership of Hon. Aliyu Bello,” the statement read. “The purported suspension is the handiwork of disgruntled elements seeking to destabilize the party ahead of upcoming elections.”
They also urged the national leadership of the APC to disregard the suspension notice, warning that internal sabotage could undermine the party’s unity and electoral strength in the state.
Bello, a close ally of key political figures in the North Central region, has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations, but sources close to him say he remains committed to party cohesion and reconciliation.
The APC at the national level has not officially commented on the matter, though insiders suggest the party may soon dispatch a fact-finding committee to Nasarawa to resolve the dispute.
Political observers say the incident reflects broader factional tensions within the state chapter, which has seen growing competition between rival blocs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
