A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State has announced the suspension of two former governors, two ex-senators and seven other prominent members over alleged anti-party activities and insubordination.
Those suspended include former Edo State governors John Odigie Oyegun and Osareimen Osunbor. Also affected are former senators Yisa Braimah and Ehigie Uzamere.
Other party members placed on suspension are Nosa Ehima, a former Oredo Local Government chairman; Sylvester Ewanehi, a former state commissioner; Tony Alile, the newly elected state chairman of the party; Jafaru Sumaila; Stella Alli; Igieogbe Asemota; and Christopher Ojeikere, the party’s state publicity secretary.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by Kennedy Odion, who identified himself as the factional state chairman of the party. He said the decision was reached at a meeting of the State Executive Committee (EXCO).
According to Odion, the affected members were suspended for alleged refusal to comply with lawful directives of the party, engaging in anti-party conduct and actions inconsistent with the party’s constitution and objectives.
He further accused them of unauthorised factionalisation, including the creation of parallel party organs and structures capable of causing disaffection and disorder within the party.
The State EXCO also alleged that the suspended individuals participated in unauthorised caucuses and groups not recognised by the party’s constitution.
As part of the disciplinary measures, the faction directed that the affected members be barred from participating in all party meetings, activities and decision-making processes. They are also prohibited from representing the party in any official or unofficial capacity and must cease presenting themselves as officers or agents of the ADC.
“All party organs and structures are hereby directed to deny recognition and operational access to the affected members during the period of suspension,” the statement said.
Odion added that in line with Article 15(B) of the party’s constitution and principles of natural justice, the allegations would be formally communicated in writing to each member. The State Disciplinary Committee is expected to notify them of hearing dates, during which they will have the right to defend themselves, present witnesses and be represented by counsel.
He stated that proceedings would be concluded within the constitutionally prescribed timeframe. The suspended members retain the right to appeal under Article 15(D), with appeals to be filed within 14 days and determined within 21 days by the appropriate higher organ of the party.
All Local Government and Ward executives, as well as affiliated structures, were directed to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order and report any breach to the State EXCO.
The suspension, according to the faction, takes immediate effect, further deepening the leadership crisis within the Edo State chapter of the party.
