Former governorship aspirant in Cross River State, Gershom Bassey, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming ongoing internal crises, divisions and unresolved conflicts within the party.
Bassey, who represented Cross River South Senatorial District in the Senate during the 8th and 9th National Assemblies, said his decision was taken “with a heavy heart,” adding that recent developments in the party had made it difficult for him to remain optimistic about its future.
In a resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, and addressed to PDP leaders in Ward 9, Calabar South Local Government Area, the former senator formally announced his exit from the party.
He explained that persistent internal disputes had weakened the party’s structure and undermined the principles upon which it was founded.
“The most recent crisis has unfortunately made it clear that the party is drifting further away from the ideals that once bound us together,” Bassey stated.
The former lawmaker also expressed disappointment over what he described as the failure of party elders and leaders to make sincere efforts to restore discipline, unity and a clear vision within the party.
“What makes this even more painful is the apparent unwillingness of party elders and leaders to genuinely fight for its soul and restore the discipline, unity and vision that once defined it,” he added.
According to Bassey, the ongoing internal struggles have transformed what was once a respected democratic institution that reflected the hopes and aspirations of many Nigerians into a shadow of its former self.
He said stepping away from the party was preferable to remaining in a system that no longer reflects the principles he believes in, noting that he had invested significant time, resources and commitment in building the party over the years.
However, Bassey did not reveal his next political move as the race toward the 2027 governorship election in Cross River State gradually begins to gather momentum.
