The Osun State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the 2026 governorship election will now be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The election was initially scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026, but has been moved forward by one week following a directive from the Commission’s national headquarters in Abuja.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Osun INEC Public Affairs Officer, Musa Olurode, on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke.
According to the statement, the adjustment followed an official communication from INEC’s national headquarters. Political parties, candidates, stakeholders, and residents across Osun State have been formally notified of the new date.
The Commission noted that several pre-election activities had already been completed in line with the approved timetable for the poll and in accordance with existing electoral guidelines.
INEC also assured that all remaining processes would be conducted strictly under the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It emphasized that adherence to the law would guide the implementation of the outstanding stages of the election.
Reassuring stakeholders, the Commission maintained that the change in date would not undermine the credibility of the process, reiterating its commitment to delivering a free, fair, transparent, and inclusive governorship election.
INEC further stressed that the success of the poll depends on the cooperation of all parties, calling on political parties, security agencies, the media, civil society organisations, and eligible voters in Osun State to work together to ensure a peaceful and orderly exercise on the rescheduled date.
