Rivers State politics took a fresh turn as Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike targeted former Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of Rivers, Rotimi Amaechi, over a recent opposition-led protest against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
Wike, who succeeded Amaechi as governor after defeating him in the 2025 governorship election, appeared in a viral video criticizing Amaechi for attending the protest with his son, a medical doctor, without bringing any medical equipment or ambulance. The FCT Minister questioned the preparedness and leadership of opposition figures, noting that they began criticizing the government barely two years after leaving power, despite Amaechi being part of the previous eight-year administration under the late Muhammadu Buhari.
The rivalry between Wike and Amaechi dates back to 2015 when Amaechi left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the general election, and Wike went on to win the governorship under the PDP.
The latest remarks by Wike have sparked reactions across social media. Some, like Gloria, criticized Amaechi, saying, “He shouldn’t protest with the masses. They are terrible people.” Others, like Anyaele Ugochukwu, defended Amaechi, arguing, “Wike can never play full opposition like Amaechi… That’s why he flows with the current system.” Meanwhile, Dunsi Titus described Amaechi as “a joker,” and Koko Etim questioned the absence of ambulances during protests, criticizing the alleged lapse in public safety planning.
The exchange highlights the continuing tension between the two political heavyweights and underscores the high-stakes nature of Rivers State politics as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
