Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has petitioned the Senate to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, urging action against alleged perpetrators and systemic failures in the case.
The petition, submitted on Wednesday during plenary on behalf of Inibehe Effiong Chambers, accuses individuals of attempting to “shield those responsible from accountability.” It demands the arrest and prosecution of the prime suspect, Victor Ogbuja, and calls on the Benue State Government to challenge the acquittal of his father, Andrew Ogbuja.
Ochanya, a student of the Federal Government Girls College, Gboko, died on October 17, 2018, reportedly due to health complications arising from prolonged sexual abuse. According to the petition, she had been living with the Ogbuja family since age five and was repeatedly abused by both Andrew and Victor Ogbuja from the age of six until her death.
Akpoti-Uduaghan criticised the Nigeria Police Force for failing to rearrest Victor after he absconded and condemned the state government for refusing to appeal Andrew Ogbuja’s 2022 acquittal. She stated, “Ochanya suffered severe violations for years, yet justice continues to be delayed and denied… This case represents a failure of the system to protect a child.”
The petition also notes that Ochanya developed vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) due to the abuse. Her aunt, Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja, received a five-month sentence for negligence, while Victor remains at large.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, for review.
The case has drawn nationwide attention, with the hashtag #JusticeForOchanya trending on social media last month, marking the seventh anniversary of her death. Her family has reportedly faced threats for seeking justice, prompting appeals to the Federal Government, the Inspector-General of Police, and advocacy groups for protection.
