Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has declared that he will not contest for any political position in the 2027 general elections, insisting his renewed political engagement is focused on mentorship and support for credible leadership.
El-Rufai made this known in Kaduna on Wednesday while receiving a group of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory explained that his plan after leaving office in 2023 was to take a break from partisan politics. However, he said recent national developments had compelled him to return to the political space.
“I am not contesting for anything. I don’t want to go to the Senate. I am not seeking any position,” El-Rufai said.
“When I finished my tenure as governor, I intended to rest. But given the way things have turned out, I believe we must play our part to bring about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics.”
He added that his current priority is mentoring young people, women, and reform-minded Nigerians, encouraging them to take up active roles in governance.
The former governor also urged youths across the country to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise, stressing that their participation is crucial in reshaping Nigeria’s political future.
El-Rufai’s remarks come amid growing speculations about alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several prominent figures already declaring interest in presidential and gubernatorial contests.
