The Lagos State Government has condemned the assault of its Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) at the Mile 2 axis, pledging that the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement on Thursday, described the incident as “appalling and utterly reprehensible,” stressing that it would not go unpunished.
“We received with profound indignation reports of the grievous incident at Mile 2, where VIOs were viciously assaulted while executing their lawful mandate. This act is a direct affront, not only to the officers involved, but also to the authority and dignity of the Lagos State Government. It will never go unpunished,” Osiyemi said.
The commissioner emphasized that VIO officials are legally empowered agents of the state tasked with safeguarding lives through road safety enforcement, adding that any attack on them undermines the rule of law and public order.
“The perpetrators of this disgraceful attack will be relentlessly pursued, apprehended, and subjected to the full sanctions of the law. Thankfully, the injured officers are responding to treatment. However, this does not in any way diminish the gravity of the assault, or the firm resolve of the government to bring the culprits to justice,” he stated.
Osiyemi reaffirmed the state government’s solidarity with the injured officers and assured all VIO personnel of their safety and protection.
He further reiterated the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that criminal elements are not allowed to intimidate or obstruct state officers in the discharge of their lawful duties.
