Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has called on his teammates to give him a special birthday present by securing a vital victory against Benin Republic in today’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
In a video shared on the Super Eagles’ official X handle, the 33-year-old forward expressed his desire for a win, describing it as “the best birthday gift” he could receive from the team.
“Hello guys, today is the day, and today is my birthday,” Musa said. “We all know what is at stake when they get and wait for the result of South Africa–Rwanda. I know you can do it. This is the best birthday gift that you’re gonna give me, guys. I miss you all. I wish you best of luck.”
Musa, who remains Nigeria’s most-capped player, urged his teammates to replicate the determination and performance that earned them success in their previous fixture.
“I know we can do it. Let’s do it again today. Best of luck,” he added.
The video message came just hours before the decisive Group C encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, where Nigeria must win to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
The Super Eagles currently sit third in the group with 14 points, trailing leaders Benin Republic by three points and South Africa by one. A win for Nigeria, combined with a favourable result in the South Africa–Rwanda game, could see them move into a play-off position.
Nigeria, who missed out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, are seeking to avoid consecutive qualification failures for the first time since their debut appearance at the global showpiece in 1994.
The Eagles will be without key players Ademola Lookman (suspension) and defenders Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel, who are both injured.
Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, where fans are expected to turn out in large numbers to cheer the team in their must-win encounter.
