The Anambra State government has declared a statewide restriction of movement in preparation for the local government elections set to take place on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
In a statement released on Friday, Dr. Law Mefor, the state Commissioner for Information, announced that the restriction will be enforced from 8 am to 4 pm on the day of the election. The measure aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the local government polls across the state.
“Ndi Anambra are hereby informed that there will be a restriction of movement throughout Anambra State on Saturday, 28th September 2024, from 8 am to 4 pm, as requested by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC),” Mefor said in the statement.
The commissioner emphasized that the restriction is necessary to facilitate a smooth and uninterrupted voting process. However, certain individuals and groups will be exempt from the movement ban, including those on election duties and essential services, such as ANSIEC officials, electoral observers, accredited journalists, emergency medical services, and firefighters.
Mefor urged all residents of Anambra to comply fully with the order, warning that any violation could result in legal consequences.
The announcement comes as ANSIEC continues to deploy materials and ad hoc staff to ensure the success of the election, despite previous reports of challenges such as the late arrival of electoral materials during earlier exercises. The upcoming elections will be crucial for filling local government council positions across the state.
This restriction is part of broader efforts to maintain peace and security during the elections, as the state prepares to elect new local government officials.
