Uyo, Nigeria – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has declared its readiness to prevent any form of unrest ahead of a planned protest on October 1. The command stated it is “battle-ready” to maintain order and ensure the safety of residents, according to the state’s police spokesperson, Timfon John.
Speaking in an interview with PUNCH Online on Sunday, John confirmed that Commissioner of Police Joseph Eribo had deployed officers to strategic locations across the state to ensure that the protest does not escalate into chaos. The planned demonstration, dubbed the #FearlessOctober1 protest, is intended to be a continuation of the #Endbadgovernance protests held earlier this year from August 1 to 10.
John reassured residents that adequate security measures are in place to allow them to go about their daily activities without fear of disruption. She added that if the protest does go ahead, it will be tightly controlled to prevent any violence or hijacking by criminal elements.
“We are ready, battle ready,” John said. “We have tight security, and unlike the last protest, people should go about their normal businesses without fear of molestation because we have put in necessary security to ensure that the peace in the state is maintained.”
Police Crackdown on October 1 Protest Plans
The police presence follows reports of potential protests in various states on Independence Day, as opposition groups and activists plan demonstrations against the government. In Akwa Ibom, the police are determined to prevent any disruption of the state’s peace and security.
The command’s warning echoes similar statements from other states, where security agencies have cautioned against potential unrest during the planned nationwide protests. Authorities have urged organizers to shelve their plans, citing concerns about public safety and the risk of violent infiltration by hoodlums.
Peace and Stability a Priority
The Akwa Ibom Police Command’s firm stance highlights the government’s broader efforts to maintain law and order. Security officials are working to ensure that any protests that occur remain peaceful and do not spiral into violence, as was seen during previous protests across the country.
Residents of the state are being advised to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activities. The police have emphasized that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and respond swiftly to any developments.
As October 1 approaches, tensions may rise across different states, but the Akwa Ibom Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the peace and stability of the state.
