PARIS – France World Cup winner and former Real Madrid star Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. The Manchester United and Real Madrid veteran made the announcement on Tuesday via social media, citing his desire to embark on a new chapter in life following a knee injury.
Varane, who recently joined Italian club Como, was excluded from their Serie A squad due to the injury he sustained in August. In his heartfelt message, Varane said, “A new life begins off the pitch.”
The decorated center-back expressed gratitude for his time in the sport and hinted at staying involved with Como in a different capacity. “I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads,” he added, teasing that he has more to share about his future endeavors soon.
Varane, who won four Champions League titles with Real Madrid and the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France, retires as one of the most accomplished defenders of his generation. His decision comes as a surprise to many, but Varane appears optimistic about the next phase of his career away from the pitch.
