SOKOTO – Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State swore in the newly elected Local Government Council Chairmen on Monday, urging them to remain within their constituencies and ensure accessibility to the public. During the ceremony held at the Government House, the governor emphasized that his administration would not tolerate absentee leadership, laziness, or indifference to work.
“Local government chairmen must stay within their domains and be accessible to their subjects. Gone are the days when chairmen abandoned their offices for hotel rooms,” Aliyu said. He warned that any local government official found disregarding these directives would face severe consequences.
In light of the state’s ongoing security challenges, Aliyu directed the chairmen to hold regular meetings with security agencies in their areas, aligning with his administration’s 9-point Smart Agenda, which prioritizes security. “Give security all the desired attention,” the governor urged, reiterating his commitment to securing Sokoto State and calling on communities for support and prayers.
Governor Aliyu also stressed the importance of complying with the Code of Conduct Laws and urged the chairmen to find ways to boost internally generated revenue to meet the needs of their people. He issued a stern warning against corruption, emphasizing that his administration has zero tolerance for the misuse of public funds.
In his closing remarks, Aliyu called on the people of Sokoto to offer continuous prayers for the success and guidance of the current administration, especially in these challenging times.
State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Ibrahim Dadi Adare, announced that the Ministry would organize an induction course for the newly elected chairmen to familiarize them with the operations of local government councils.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including APC leader Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Sokoto State Deputy Governor Idris Muhammad Gobir, Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly Tukur Bala, and lawmakers from both the national and state assemblies. Former Deputy Governors of Sokoto and Zamfara States, Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, and Hassan Nasiha, along with other high-ranking officials, also graced the event.
Earlier in the day, the Sokoto State Independent Electoral Commission, led by Chairman Suleiman Aliyu, declared all 23 local government election candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as winners in the elections held on Saturday, September 21.
