United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, on Thursday urged for the correction of long-standing “injustices” against Africa, advocating for the continent to have a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Guterres made these remarks during the China-Africa Forum, attended by over 50 African leaders, as reported by state media.
Addressing the forum, Guterres said, “It is outrageous… that the continent of Africa still has no permanent seat on the Security Council.” He highlighted that despite Africa’s rich potential and significant global influence, it remains underrepresented in critical global decision-making institutions.
Guterres also spoke about Africa’s economic challenges, stressing the burden of debt and limited resources. “Many African countries are mired in debt and struggling to invest in sustainable development,” he noted, adding that effective debt relief and sufficient funding remain out of reach for many nations on the continent.
He pointed to China’s successful development efforts, particularly in poverty eradication, as a model from which Africa could benefit. “China’s remarkable record of development… provides a wealth of experience and expertise,” Guterres stated, emphasizing the potential for collaboration between China and Africa in areas such as food systems, digital connectivity, trade, and technology.
The UN chief’s call for Africa to secure a permanent position on the UN Security Council aligns with long-standing demands from African leaders who argue that the continent deserves greater influence on global security and economic decisions.
With some of the world’s fastest-growing economies, Africa stands poised to maximize the benefits of global partnerships, including with China, as it seeks to address challenges and harness opportunities for sustainable growth.
Guterres’ remarks underscore the need for a more equitable global system that acknowledges Africa’s contributions and addresses its pressing economic concerns.
