KONTAGORA, NIGER STATE – The Niger State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 70-year-old man, identified simply as Buba, whose body was found by the roadside near the BCGA Bridge on Kontagora-Zuru Road. The incident has raised concerns among local residents, who believe the elderly beggar may have died from hunger.
Buba, a known figure in the area, was often seen at various junctions in Kontagora begging for alms. He was originally from Bangi, the headquarters of Magama Local Government Area in Niger State, and had been living in poverty for many years.
On August 14, 2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the Niger State Police received a report about an unconscious man lying by the roadside. Officers from A Division Kontagora were dispatched to the scene, where they found Buba’s lifeless body.
Wasiu Abiodun, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, stating, “The police operatives attached to A Division Kontagora visited the scene. The body was examined, and no sign of violence was seen on the body. The local government area’s social welfare officials were contacted, and the body was removed to the general hospital, where he was confirmed dead.”
While the initial examination showed no signs of physical violence, further medical tests are being conducted at the Kontagora General Hospital to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are particularly concerned about reports suggesting that Buba may have succumbed to starvation.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary, where they await burial. The police have assured the public that the investigation will continue until all relevant facts are uncovered.
This tragic incident has sparked conversations about the plight of the elderly and impoverished in Niger State, with many calling for increased support and protection for vulnerable populations.
