A dynamite explosion struck the secretariat of the Action People’s Party (APP) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, early Monday morning, causing significant damage to the building. The attack occurred around 1 a.m. and involved the assailants hurling substances believed to be dynamite into the party’s headquarters, shattering windows, doors, and damaging other property.
The incident comes amid speculation that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, might be planning to align himself with the APP. This speculation follows claims that his predecessor and former political mentor, Nyesom Wike, has allegedly taken control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
A correspondent who visited the scene reported extensive damage, including destruction to the ceiling and fittings of the building. Some APP officials were seen discussing the attack, with one official, who wished to remain anonymous, suggesting that the assault was politically motivated.
“This is politically-motivated and there is no two ways about it,” the official said. “They know that the APP is a fast-growing political party in the state. We call on the police to investigate this and arrest the culprits.”
Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the state police command, indicated she was unaware of the incident but promised to investigate and provide further details.
The attack on the APP secretariat has added to the political tension in the region, reflecting the heightened stakes in the state’s political landscape.
