Tensions have emerged between Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, and the state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) regarding the political appointments made by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The PDP has accused Governor Oyebanji of utilizing the state’s limited resources for political appointments within his party, alleging that this move is aimed at diverting state funds for his second term ambition.
In response, Governor Oyebanji dismissed these criticisms, labeling the opposition party as anti-people. He asserted that his administration meticulously followed due process in appointing prominent Ekiti individuals into his cabinet, emphasizing that commendation rather than unwarranted attacks from the opposition are warranted.
The recent appointment of over 110 Special Assistants (SAs), Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), and Technical Advisors (TAs) by the state government drew particular scrutiny from the PDP. The party accused Governor Oyebanji of transforming the state into a poverty alleviation center for his party members.
Raphael Adeyanju, the PDP’s publicity secretary in the state, condemned the appointments, citing the ongoing economic hardship and insecurity in Ekiti. He alleged that the governor prioritized enriching his party faithfuls over addressing the plight of the Ekiti populace.
In response, the governor’s media center, the BAO Media Centre, defended the appointments as a vital step towards fulfilling the government’s primary mandate of ensuring the security and welfare of citizens. The center emphasized Governor Oyebanji’s commitment to empowering Ekiti residents and improving their livelihoods, rejecting attempts to detract from the current administration’s efforts.
The governor’s office called for constructive dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders, including the PDP, to advance the progress and development of Ekiti State.
