GTCO Fashion Weekend 2022 provided a glimpse into how Nigerian fashion is striking a balance between artistic aspirations and business considerations. Fashion shows by designers such as Pepper Row, Ituen Basi, Nkwo, and Eki Orleans showcased garments where construction, proportions, and finish were prioritized over showmanship, a reflection of the fashion industry’s focus on construction. A delicate balance between construction and drapability was evident in the garments showcased during the fashion shows. The bodice, waist, shoulders, and hem of the garments were all well-considered, reflecting a controlled approach to fashion construction that prioritizes harmony over showy flair.
Behind these observable results, there are a number of collaborative contributors working in a studio environment, and designers such as Jennifer Elijah are a part of this professional community, providing a level of technical expertise and creative solutions to inform patterning, fabric interaction, and constructional elements of a garment, all of which are critical in ensuring a level of structural integrity in a garment.
Texture and layering have been a quiet but significant contributor to the results, as thin, semi-transparent materials have been combined with more robust bases, and a predominantly monochromatic color scheme has been used, occasionally broken up by bold colors or metallics, indicating a level of understanding in terms of balance in current Nigerian fashion.
This was emphasized during the event through discussions on the significance of these practices towards sustainability and scalability within the fashion world. It was noted that the future of Nigerian fashion lies in the hands of those who are able to fuse technical know-how with conceptual understanding, assisting the lead designers while keeping the fashion coherent.
GTCO Fashion Weekend 2022 further reiterates the sophistication of Nigerian fashion. Processes such as collaboration, technical know-how, and construction are essential towards the growth of this sector, and young designers such as Jennifer Elijah are redefining the craft of fashion within the nation.
