Two Tiv farmers were killed in a recent attack in the Obosidima community of Keana Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, amid an ongoing land dispute with the Alago community.
The violence erupted along the Nasarawa-Benue border, involving indigenous Alago and Tiv farmers, resulting in four fatalities and several injuries. The crisis has severely impacted the area, leading to a significant breakdown of peace between the two communities.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, Isaiah Audu, President of the Tiv Youths Organisation, condemned the persistent attacks on Tiv farmers. Audu urged the state government to intervene urgently to restore peace and order in the region.
He highlighted the escalating violence that has disrupted farming activities, crucial for addressing hunger and starvation in the country. Audu recalled a previous attack on June 24, 2024, in Bakin Kotar, which had sparked further violence and reprisals.
“The situation has deteriorated with recent attacks on Tiv villages, including Adaga and Obosidoma, where valuable properties were destroyed and lives lost,” Audu said. He called for calm among Tiv youths and appealed to the state government and security agencies to take decisive action against the perpetrators.
In response, Mohammed Oshafu, President of the Alago Ikweyi Ggayi Development Union, denied allegations that Alago people were behind the violence. Oshafu claimed that Tiv farmers had attempted to encroach on Alago lands and had engaged in acts of intimidation and violence against his people.
Oshafu also urged the Nasarawa State government to intensify efforts to resolve the conflict and prevent further bloodshed.
The situation remains tense as both communities await intervention from state authorities to address the ongoing crisis and prevent additional violence.
