The Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed the removal of Julius Abure as National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the party’s lawful leadership.
The ruling was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Lifu in a judgment confirming that Abure’s tenure had elapsed in line with an earlier decision of the Supreme Court. The court consequently directed INEC to immediately recognise Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate leader of the party.
The development was disclosed by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, in a post on X, where he said he was present at the Federal High Court when the judgment was delivered. According to Effiong, the court upheld the Nenadi Usman-led committee as the only valid and lawful leadership of the Labour Party.
“I am currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja for a case. I listened to judgment delivered in another case,” Effiong wrote. “Honourable Justice Lifu has just upheld Senator Nnadi Esther Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the only valid and lawful leadership of the Labour Party. The judge reaffirmed that by the Supreme Court’s judgment, Julius Abure’s tenure had since elapsed and ordered INEC to recognise Nnadi Usman forthwith.”
The ruling puts to rest lingering leadership disputes within the Labour Party and formally hands control of the party to the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee, with immediate effect.
