The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a security guard, identified as Amos Kini, for allegedly abducting a two-year-old boy in the Elemoro area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the incident was reported by the child’s mother on September 21.
According to the statement, the mother alleged that Kini, who worked as her security guard, absconded with her son and a mobile phone late at night without her consent.
“The suspect later used the stolen phone to contact the father of the child, demanding a ransom of five million naira (₦5,000,000.00) for his release,” Adebisi said.
Police investigations also led to the questioning of one Aruna Dauda, who had stood as guarantor for the suspect at the time of his employment.
Although Kini eventually released the child unharmed, operatives of the command’s Tactical Squad, known as Hyena, intensified their search and on September 23 tracked him to a hideout within the Elemoro area, where he was arrested.
“The suspect has since confessed to the crime and remains in police custody. He will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the police spokesperson added.
The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, condemned the abduction and reassured residents of the command’s determination to curb violent and capital crimes across Lagos State.
The police further advised parents and guardians to remain vigilant and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities through its emergency hotlines.
Earlier this month, the command confirmed that five bodies recovered along the Oreta riverbank in the Igbogbo community of Ikorodu Local Government Area were victims of a cult-related attack. The incident was part of a series of cult clashes in Lagos, which police said have led to the arrest of over 26 suspects so far.
