The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has reassured Nigerians that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) currently approved for use in the country are safe for human health and the environment.
The Director-General of the agency, Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, gave the assurance in a statement on Monday amid renewed debates and public concerns about the safety of GMOs. He described much of the controversy as the result of misinformation and misconceptions.
“Our top priority is the well-being of Nigerians. We will never compromise public health or safety in the pursuit of innovation,” Mustapha said.
He explained that the agency’s mandate is rooted in advancing innovative research across agriculture, health, industry, and environmental management, with the aim of improving lives and driving sustainable development.
According to Mustapha, GMOs are globally recognised as safe, having been subjected to decades of research and rigorous international standards. In Nigeria, he added, every GMO product must undergo strict risk assessment and receive regulatory approval from the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) before entering circulation.
“It is important for Nigerians to know that GMOs are safe. Around the world, they have been researched for decades, regulated by rigorous international standards, and tested extensively. Here in Nigeria, no GMO product enters circulation without the full approval of the NBMA,” he stated.
The NBRDA boss also highlighted ongoing efforts to counter misinformation through evidence-based advocacy, training, and public engagement. He said the agency is working with farmers, scientists, policymakers, civil society, and young people through workshops, community outreach, and field demonstrations to build trust and awareness.
Mustapha stressed that the agency remains committed to sensitisation and research-driven advocacy, ensuring Nigerians benefit from biotechnology while safeguarding public health and environmental safety.
