Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged collective efforts to safeguard schools across the country, stressing that education remains central to securing the nation’s future.
In a statement on Tuesday to mark the 2025 International Day to Protect Education from Attack, Mrs Tinubu a former teacher described education as the “foundation of hope” and warned that any society that failed to protect its schools risked undermining its future.
This year’s observance has the theme “Challenging Narratives, Reshaping Action.” The First Lady said the theme was a call to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive steps to guarantee the safety of learners, teachers, and educational institutions.
“Education must never be compromised. The theme calls us to move beyond words and take stronger action to safeguard education,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu commended global organisations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Education Above All Foundation for advancing child education and acknowledged the efforts of Nigerian security agencies. However, she stressed the need for greater commitment.
“In Nigeria, our security agencies are doing their best, but protecting schools must remain a shared national priority,” she added.
The International Day to Protect Education from Attack, proclaimed by the United Nations, is observed annually on September 9 to highlight the plight of millions of children worldwide who are denied safe learning environments due to conflict and insecurity.
