The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Abayomi Arabambi, has said former presidential candidate Peter Obi will not secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics on Monday, Arabambi dismissed Obi’s influence on the party’s electoral fortunes, insisting the LP could thrive without him.
“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi declared.
His comments come after Obi, during the August by-elections, urged his supporters to vote for candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The former Anambra governor clarified that his advice was because LP fielded no candidates in the polls, but the party leadership described his stance as “false and anti-party.”
Arabambi argued that the momentum that carried the LP in the 2023 elections was less about Obi’s candidacy and more about the energy of the #EndSARS movement and public frustration with former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“The momentum in 2023 was not because of Peter Obi, but because of EndSARS. Obi was just a man who came to whip as a result of Nigeria’s tiredness of the scandalous administration of Buhari. He only found Labour Party as that vehicle that could provide that change,” Arabambi said.
He also accused the LP’s Acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist Aisha Yesufu of aligning with Obi, vowing that the party would move against them.
Arabambi further challenged Obi to publicly announce his departure from the LP.
“Obi has one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC. If he believes he has the proficiency on his own to have seven million votes in 2027, we advise him to pronounce his departure,” he added.
