Lagos, Sept. 2, 2025 — Nigerian singer Obumneme Ali, popularly known as Smash of the music duo Bracket, has shed new light on the long-running feud between P-Square brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, describing their conflict as “spiritual.”
P-Square, who dominated the Nigerian and African music scene in the 2000s with chart-topping hits like Do Me and Personally, achieved global recognition with their 2011 album Invasion. But by 2016, tensions over management, royalties, and creative control began to strain the partnership, leading to a high-profile split in 2017.
Despite a reunion tour and public reconciliations in 2021, cracks have persisted, keeping the brothers’ relationship uneasy.
Speaking on the AFRIMMA Podcast on August 29, Smash revealed that even Paul Okoye acknowledged the depth of the rift.
“I’m closer to Paul than Peter, but I always visit Peter’s house and he listens whenever I speak to him. Honestly, if you ask me as someone inside the circle, I would say the problem is spiritual,” Smash said.
He recalled P-Square’s role in Bracket’s rise, including their first major opportunity after meeting the duo in Enugu. “Jude [Okoye] looked at me and said, ‘Just keep walking, if the right song comes, we’ll call you.’ And that’s exactly what happened,” he recounted.
Smash also described how, after the success of Yori Yori, Paul invited them to his home, offering him his first taste of whiskey an experience he likened to “Christmas.”
Reflecting on the rift, Smash expressed sadness, pointing to the Okoye brothers’ shared passion for their brand. “Paul and Peter loved P-Square with so much passion. If you see Peter building stagecraft, you’d think this one is not human,” he said, citing Peter’s relentless rehearsals for the video shoot of Alingo.
While refraining from taking sides, Smash stressed that the conflict was beyond normal disagreements.
“We can never be on any side, but the last time I met Paul, I told him his problem with Peter isn’t normal, it’s spiritual. Paul agreed,” he added.
The revelation adds a new dimension to one of Nigeria’s most closely followed music sagas, as fans continue to hope for lasting reconciliation between the iconic duo.
