The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commended the peaceful atmosphere that characterised Saturday’s senatorial bye-election in the state’s central district.
The State Commandant, Gbenga Agun, gave the commendation while monitoring polling units across Esan South-West, Esan Central, Esan North-East, and Esan South-East Local Government Areas.
Agun said the corps, working in collaboration with other security agencies, maintained law and order throughout the exercise. He attributed the hitch-free polls to the strategic deployment of personnel and adequate security measures put in place.
“We have deployed our men and are working closely with other security agencies to guarantee a peaceful process,” he told journalists.
According to him, although voter turnout was relatively low in some areas, the exercise was orderly, and voters participated without fear. “The turnout may not be massive, but voters are casting their ballots without fear,” Agun noted.
During his monitoring tour, the commandant interacted with voters and assured them of their safety as well as the protection of election materials.
The senatorial bye-election in Edo Central was conducted to fill a vacant seat in the Senate following recent political developments in the state.
