The Yobe State Government has strongly denied rumours suggesting that Governor Mai Mala Buni is planning to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the claim as “baseless and unfounded.”
The denial was issued by the Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed, in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Online on Wednesday in Damaturu, the state capital.
Mohammed dismissed the report as a recycled falsehood that had already been debunked in the past.
“It’s a wild dream of the author,” he said. “Someone had earlier speculated this and it was debunked. It’s an empty speculation.”
He reiterated Governor Buni’s long-standing commitment to the APC, under which he is currently serving his second term as governor, and cautioned against spreading politically motivated misinformation.
“Governor Buni is a loyal and credible member of the All Progressives Congress. He would be the last person to leave the ruling party,” Mohammed stated.
The rumour had circulated earlier in the week on some online platforms, sparking political speculation ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, the Yobe State Government maintains that there is no basis for such claims and urges the public to disregard them.
Political analysts say Buni, who previously served as the APC National Caretaker Chairman, remains an influential figure within the party and has played a key role in its recent electoral successes in the North-East.
The rebuttal comes as Nigeria’s political space continues to heat up ahead of 2027, with increasing scrutiny of party loyalties and shifting alliances across state and national levels.
