Former Minister of Transportation and ex-presidential aspirant Rotimi Amaechi has said that only the Nigerian people have the power to determine whether President Bola Tinubu will secure a second term in 2027.
Speaking during a public policy dialogue in Abuja on Wednesday, Amaechi emphasized that the outcome of the next general election will not be decided by political godfathers or opposition coalitions, but by the will of the electorate.
“If Nigerians want change, they know what to do. Only Nigerians — not politicians or power brokers — can stop Tinubu in 2027,” Amaechi said, while responding to a question on the state of the opposition.
A Subtle Critique of Political Complacency
Though Amaechi did not directly attack the Tinubu administration, his remarks were widely interpreted as a subtle critique of both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the fragmented opposition. He urged citizens to actively participate in the democratic process rather than rely on elite negotiations or last-minute alliances.
“It’s not about what politicians say or promise; it’s about whether Nigerians will choose to hold them accountable at the ballot box,” he added.
Opposition Still in Disarray
As the 2027 election approaches, the political landscape remains fluid, with opposition parties still struggling to form a united front. Meanwhile, President Tinubu has not formally declared his intention to run for re-election but continues to consolidate support within the APC.
Amaechi, a key figure in the 2023 APC presidential primaries, has remained relatively quiet on his own political future but is still considered an influential voice within the party.
Call for Voter Vigilance
Amaechi concluded his remarks by calling on Nigerians to educate themselves on policy, reject vote-buying, and demand transparency from all candidates — regardless of party affiliation.
