Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has formally submitted a proposal advocating for a single, non-renewable term for the presidency to the opposition coalition, as discussions intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, speaking during a closed-door meeting with leaders of the coalition, emphasized that the single-tenure system would foster greater accountability and reduce political distractions associated with re-election campaigns.
“The idea is to ensure that a president focuses fully on governance and national development without the pressure of seeking a second term,” Obi explained. “This reform could transform Nigeria’s political landscape and promote stability.”
The proposal has sparked debate within the coalition, with some members welcoming the move as a bold step toward political reform, while others urge further consultations to assess its implications on democratic governance.
Political analysts suggest that if adopted, the single-term presidency could reshape electoral strategies and governance practices in Nigeria.
The opposition coalition is expected to deliberate on the proposal in its upcoming summit, with a formal position anticipated later this month.
