The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the recent pledge by Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Edo State, to deliver 2.5 million votes to President Bola Tinubu, describing the claim as “baseless and politically desperate.”
Okpebholo made the bold promise during a campaign rally in Benin City, vowing to mobilize massive grassroots support for Tinubu ahead of the next general elections. He asserted that the APC remains the most trusted platform for delivering good governance and development to Edo people.
However, the PDP swiftly responded, accusing Okpebholo of playing to the gallery and attempting to mislead voters with inflated projections that do not reflect the political reality on the ground.
“Edo State does not even have up to 2.5 million registered voters according to INEC’s current data,” said Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP in Edo State. “This is pure propaganda. Okpebholo should focus on presenting a credible manifesto to the people, not making empty promises to impress the Presidency.”
The PDP further alleged that the APC’s performance in the state and at the federal level has eroded public trust, making such a target not just unrealistic but laughable.
Political analysts have weighed in on the debate, noting that while voter mobilization is a critical campaign strategy, exaggerated figures can backfire if not backed by clear data and grassroots credibility.
As the Edo governorship race heats up ahead of the September 2025 election, parties are intensifying efforts to win public support, with issues of insecurity, economic hardship, and youth unemployment dominating campaign narratives.
