A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged growing tensions within the ruling party, claiming that President Bola Tinubu’s political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 elections pose a direct threat to the political future of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his family.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the APC stalwart said what began as a strategic alliance between Tinubu and El-Rufai has deteriorated into a quiet rivalry, with mounting concerns that the El-Rufai political dynasty may be deliberately sidelined in the run-up to the next general elections.
“There’s no doubt anymore—Tinubu is becoming a political problem for the El-Rufai family,” the party leader said, citing recent developments within the APC that have seen El-Rufai’s allies lose influence both at the national level and within key Northern power blocs.
Although El-Rufai has kept a relatively low profile since leaving office, his political relevance remains intact, particularly among Northern youth and reform-minded technocrats. However, analysts believe Tinubu’s consolidation of power may be aimed at stifling potential challengers, including those within the party.
The Presidency and APC leadership have not responded to the claims, but insiders warn that rising intra-party rifts could undermine cohesion ahead of the 2027 polls.
