Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was received with overwhelming jubilation on Thursday as he returned from the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, with thousands of supporters lining the streets to welcome him back to the state capital.
The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport was a sea of excitement as party loyalists, traditional dancers, youth groups, and religious leaders gathered from the early hours of the day to receive the governor, who completed his spiritual journey to Islam’s holiest sites.
Chants of “Muna tare da Abba!” (“We are with Abba!”) rang through the air as supporters waved banners, NNPP flags, and photos of the governor. A convoy of vehicles, security escorts, and local praise singers accompanied the governor’s procession through major routes in the city.
Visibly moved, Governor Yusuf greeted the crowd from atop an open-roof vehicle and expressed deep gratitude to the people of Kano for their unwavering support.
“Hajj was a moment of reflection and prayers for our state and our nation. I am spiritually renewed and ready to continue the work of building a better Kano for all,” he told reporters briefly at the airport.
The governor’s return comes amid rising political momentum for his administration following recent legal victories and policy achievements, particularly in education, healthcare, and urban development.
Prominent figures from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), members of the state executive council, and traditional leaders were all present at the reception, which analysts say reinforces his growing popularity at the grassroots.
“This welcome shows the level of trust and love the people have for their governor. It is a clear message to those who think they can undermine his mandate,” said NNPP spokesperson Ibrahim Shu’aibu.
The atmosphere in Kano remained celebratory well into the evening, with youth parades and community prayer sessions held in honour of the governor’s safe return.
Governor Yusuf is expected to resume official duties immediately, with top agenda items including post-Hajj welfare for returning pilgrims, school infrastructure projects, and ongoing security reviews.
