Senate President Godswill Akpabio has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing into law several bills establishing new tertiary institutions in the South-East, describing the move as a significant step toward addressing educational disparity and promoting regional development.
In a statement released through his media office on Monday, Akpabio said the establishment of new universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education reflects the federal government’s commitment to inclusive growth and national integration.
“The signing of these bills by President Tinubu is a demonstration of purposeful leadership and a commitment to strengthening the nation’s educational foundation, especially in regions that have long called for more federal presence,” Akpabio said.
The newly approved institutions include a Federal University of Medical Sciences in Abia State, a Federal Polytechnic in Ebonyi, and a Federal College of Education in Anambra, among others.
Akpabio emphasized that these institutions will not only expand access to quality education but also stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and enhance innovation in the region.
Lawmakers from the South-East geopolitical zone also expressed gratitude, noting that the approval of the bills marks a new chapter for youth empowerment and regional development.
Education stakeholders have lauded the move, urging the government to ensure timely funding, infrastructure development, and staffing to make the institutions fully operational and effective.
President Tinubu’s assent to the bills follows months of legislative deliberation and advocacy by members of the National Assembly, particularly those from the South-East.
With this development, the region joins other parts of the country in benefitting from the federal government’s strategic push to expand educational infrastructure nationwide.
