The political atmosphere is heating up ahead of the 2027 general elections, as allies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar claim that a wave of defections to an emerging opposition coalition is causing panic within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Monday, a key member of Atiku’s political camp revealed that Nigerians across party lines — including disillusioned APC members — are already aligning with the coalition movement aimed at unseating the ruling party in the next election cycle.
The source, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said, “The APC is visibly jittery. They’ve seen the handwriting on the wall. Nigerians are tired, and they’re moving in droves to join this coalition. What we’re witnessing is the beginning of a political realignment.”
This assertion comes days after reports surfaced of closed-door meetings between Atiku, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and other prominent figures across the political spectrum. Though details of the meetings remain guarded, insiders suggest the talks are aimed at forging a united opposition front.
According to Atiku’s camp, the growing discontent over economic hardship, insecurity, and perceived lack of leadership under the current administration is driving momentum for the new alliance.
“The coalition is not just about Atiku. It’s about saving Nigeria. It’s about rebuilding what the APC has destroyed,” the source added.
The APC has yet to respond officially to the claim, but party loyalists have downplayed the threat, insisting that the ruling party remains strong and united.
Political observers say the emergence of a powerful opposition bloc could pose the biggest challenge yet to the APC since it assumed power in 2015.
As the 2027 race gradually unfolds, the battle lines are being drawn — and defections may be just the beginning.
