Prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Segun Sowunmi, has sparked political debate after declaring that if he were ever to leave the PDP, his next political home would be the All Progressives Congress (APC)—and only because of his deep respect for former President Muhammadu Buhari and incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Sowunmi, known for his vocal presence within the PDP and his previous role as spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, made the revelation during a media interview on Tuesday. He emphasized that while he remains committed to the PDP, his admiration for the leadership styles and political resilience of Buhari and Tinubu could influence his future decisions.
“If I ever leave the PDP, the only party I can consider is the APC—and that would be solely because of the respect I have for Buhari’s discipline and Tinubu’s political genius,” Sowunmi stated.
The remark comes at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is witnessing shifting allegiances ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts say Sowunmi’s comments, though hypothetical, carry weight given his long-standing position in the opposition and his influence in Ogun State politics.
Sowunmi also used the platform to challenge political leaders across party lines to focus less on personal ambition and more on institutional legacy and national unity. “We must learn from those who have led with conviction and vision, regardless of party differences,” he added.
The PDP has yet to formally respond to Sowunmi’s remarks, though insiders say the comments have stirred internal discussions about party loyalty and future electoral strategy.
As Nigeria inches closer to another election cycle, statements like Sowunmi’s could signal a growing realignment of political forces, particularly among younger and ideologically flexible politicians seeking relevance in a rapidly evolving political environment.
