Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has offered candid insights into the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) repeated struggles to wrest political control of Lagos State. Speaking in a recent interview, Wike admitted that the party’s failed efforts were rooted in flawed strategies and internal disunity.
“We knew what we did wrong,” he said. “It wasn’t that we didn’t have the capacity or the candidates, but the approach we took was simply not the right one.”
Wike’s remarks come as the PDP grapples with soul-searching and internal debates over its future direction in Lagos, where it has consistently fallen short of unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP has struggled to establish a cohesive front in the state, with multiple factions and competing ambitions undermining its campaigns.
“Instead of working together, we had too many camps and personal interests,” Wike observed. “That’s why we failed to make the inroads we needed.”
Political analysts say Wike’s frank comments could help spark a more honest conversation within the PDP about the need for genuine unity and credible candidates in the commercial capital of Nigeria.
Lagos PDP members have yet to formally respond to Wike’s statements, but some insiders see his admission as a much-needed reality check. “It’s time for us to put aside personal egos and think about the bigger picture,” said one Lagos PDP member.
As preparations for the 2027 elections begin, party faithful and supporters will be watching closely to see if lessons from past failures will finally translate into a stronger push for the prized Lagos governorship.
