The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the arrest of four individuals suspected to be part of a coordinated theft syndicate operating in the state. Law enforcement officials say the operation led to the recovery of various stolen items, marking a breakthrough in ongoing efforts to clamp down on property crimes in the region.
According to a statement issued by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Timfon John, the arrests were made following a targeted intelligence-led operation in Eket and its environs over the weekend.
“The suspects, aged between 24 and 38, were apprehended in different locations after weeks of surveillance and tip-offs from community members,” the statement noted. “During the raid, police recovered several high-value items believed to have been stolen during a string of recent burglaries.”
Among the recovered property were home electronics, mobile phones, laptops, and household appliances, all allegedly linked to reports filed by multiple victims across three local government areas.
ASP John commended the local communities for their cooperation and vigilance, urging continued collaboration with law enforcement to rid neighborhoods of criminal elements.
“This successful operation is a testament to what can be achieved when citizens and the police work together. We assure the public that all suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” she said.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects may be connected to a larger criminal network, and police have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend additional accomplices.
Residents in affected areas expressed relief over the arrests, with many calling for increased police presence and faster legal proceedings to deter further criminal activity.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned once investigations are complete.
