Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, have apprehended two suspected members of a notorious tricycle-snatching syndicate that has been terrorizing operators and passengers in the state.
The state NSCDC Commandant, Olatunde Maku, confirmed the arrest at the command’s headquarters in Awka on Wednesday. He stated that the suspects were nabbed on Tuesday following the alleged theft of a tricycle at Araba Umuzocha, Awka.
“At approximately 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, acting on a tip-off, operatives of the command intercepted a three-man gang operating along Araba Umuzocha and its environs,” Maku disclosed.
“Nemesis caught up with them after they forcefully snatched a tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, from a victim near Regina Junction by Zik’s Avenue, Awka. Two suspects were apprehended, while one managed to escape and remains at large.”
The arrested suspects have been identified as 24-year-old Obum Charles of No. 4 Umueze Road, Amudo Village, Awka, and 27-year-old Chukwunonso Ekeh of No. 36 Onueyiagu Street, Amachala, Awka.
Maku further revealed that the duo is providing crucial information that could lead to the capture of their fleeing accomplice. He assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of the probe.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the gang specialises in snatching tricycles and robbing riders and passengers of their valuables,” Maku added.
Commending his team for their swift response, Maku reiterated the NSCDC’s commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
