The title of this piece is inspired by a line from the University of Ibadan (UI) anthem, which underscores the importance of achieving greatness through hard work and integrity. This idea of greatness, as explored in the anthem, becomes all the more relevant when we consider the life of a man who has exemplified such greatness through his unwavering commitment to excellence and service. So, what exactly defines greatness?
At its core, greatness is not a mere title but a blend of qualities—honesty, integrity, passion, resilience, fortitude, self-belief, and strong values—that come together to form a remarkable character. It is a state of distinction, one marked by dignity, nobility, and prominence. But beyond accolades and recognition, two key pillars of greatness stand out: humility and service. As English architect Charles Fowler aptly observed, “The best teachers of humanity are the lives of great men.”
One such great man is Chief Oluwole Oladapo Olanipekun, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), whose life and work offer valuable lessons in leadership, integrity, and service. Born on November 18, 1951, in Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State, Olanipekun has become one of Nigeria’s foremost legal minds and a towering figure of patriotism and dedication. As he celebrates his 73rd birthday today, it is fitting to reflect on his extraordinary contributions to the nation and the lessons we can glean from his journey.
A Legal Colossus
Chief Olanipekun’s legal career is nothing short of remarkable. Over the years, he has built an unparalleled reputation as one of the most accomplished legal practitioners in Nigeria. He holds the rare distinction of having represented four consecutive sitting Nigerian Presidents: the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and the current President Bola Tinubu. This is a feat that underscores both his legal acumen and his reputation for providing sound counsel to the highest offices in the land.
His accomplishments extend beyond these high-profile cases. Olanipekun has been involved in numerous landmark cases, particularly in defending state governors. This unparalleled success in the courtroom is testament to his expertise, dedication, and relentless pursuit of justice.
A Life of Service and Humility
Yet, it is not just his legal brilliance that defines Olanipekun’s greatness. His humility and commitment to service shine through in every aspect of his life. Despite his towering professional success, Chief Olanipekun lives a modest lifestyle, one that reflects a man of principle and authenticity. Those who know him well often speak of his integrity, his humility, and his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.
Olanipekun is a man who has used his wealth, not for personal indulgence, but for the betterment of society. Through his numerous philanthropic initiatives, he has touched the lives of countless Nigerians. His annual Wole Olanipekun Scholarship Scheme (WOSS) has supported thousands of indigent but bright students across the country. In fact, I am proud to say that I, too, was once a beneficiary of this life-changing initiative. WOSS has been running for over 20 years, consistently providing educational opportunities to those who might otherwise have been left behind.
In addition to supporting education, Chief Olanipekun has also championed various causes to alleviate poverty and empower the marginalized. He has supported widows, the elderly, and the youth, consistently demonstrating that wealth is most meaningful when used to uplift others. Remarkably, throughout his philanthropic journey, Olanipekun has maintained no political ambitions, focusing solely on giving back to his country in meaningful ways.
A Legacy of Leadership and Excellence
Chief Olanipekun’s leadership has extended beyond the legal profession. As the immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Body of Benchers, he provided visionary leadership, ensuring that the legal profession in Nigeria continued to uphold the highest standards. His influence has also been felt in the academic sector, where he has made significant contributions to the development of educational institutions.
During his tenure as Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Council at the University of Ibadan between 2009 and 2013, Olanipekun personally funded the construction of a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, leaving a lasting legacy at the institution. He made similar contributions to Ajayi Crowther University, where he built the Vice Chancellor’s lodge. Just recently, I received an invitation from him to attend the commissioning of the newly built Wole Olanipekun Senate Building at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) in Ikere Ekiti. These contributions are a testament to his unwavering commitment to improving Nigeria’s educational infrastructure.
A True Icon of Selflessness
In a world where the pursuit of wealth and power often overshadows the ideals of service and humility, Chief Olanipekun stands as a beacon of selflessness. He embodies the notion that greatness is not achieved for personal gain, but through service to others. His life exemplifies the power of hard work, integrity, and generosity in shaping a better society.
As we celebrate his legacy, let us take a moment to reflect on the lessons his life offers. Olanipekun has shown us that true greatness is not defined by titles or accolades, but by the positive impact one leaves on the lives of others. His journey reminds us that through honest toil, humility, and a commitment to service, anyone can achieve greatness.
In the words of American lawyer and orator Robert Ingersoll, “A great man does not seek applause, he seeks to serve.” Chief Olanipekun’s life is a living testament to this truth. His greatness was earned through honest toil, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
