The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has expressed its gratitude to security agencies for their successful efforts in securing the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy, who were kidnapped ten months ago.
Dr. Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband, Squadron Leader Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew, Folaranmi, who lives with them. After extensive negotiations, her husband was released on March 8, 2024.
In a press statement issued on Friday, signed by Alaba Balogun, the Head of Information and Public Relations, the ministry highlighted the relief felt within the healthcare community at the safe return of Dr. Popoola and her nephew.
The statement read, “We extend our profound gratitude to the Defence Headquarters, the dedicated troops, and all military personnel involved in this successful operation for their steadfast commitment to safeguarding our citizens.”
The ministry also acknowledged the support from various medical associations and professional bodies, which played a crucial role in uplifting the morale of healthcare workers during this challenging time.
“We remain firmly committed to the safety and protection of all medical professionals across the country. We honor the bravery and dedication of these healthcare workers, who continue to serve under demanding circumstances,” the statement continued.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to collaborating with security agencies to ensure a safe working environment for all healthcare personnel. It concluded by emphasizing its ongoing efforts to enhance security measures and create supportive conditions for those on the frontlines of healthcare in Nigeria.
