In a recent meeting with Organised Labour, the Federal Government pledged to bring five refineries back to full operation and to address outstanding wage arrears.
The discussions, aimed at fostering cooperation rather than conflict, emphasized the importance of dialogue between the government and labour leaders. Sources indicated that this approach would lead to ongoing discussions rather than confrontations.
According to reports, the meeting involved key representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), although neither party provided details to the press following their discussions.
A source revealed several key promises made by the government. To mitigate rising transport fares nationwide, the Federal Government plans to convene a meeting with state governors to promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. This initiative is expected to significantly lower transportation costs, thereby reducing food prices as well.
Additionally, the government intends to hold an economic council meeting to ensure the swift implementation of the new minimum wage across the country. Labour representatives will also be included in this council to enable them to monitor and participate in economic policy decisions.
Furthermore, the government reiterated its commitment to completing the refineries, with assurances that nearly all five facilities are nearing operational status.
This series of commitments reflects the government’s strategy to cushion the impact of subsidy removal on citizens while fostering a more collaborative relationship with labour organizations.
