Nigerian music icon Wizkid has ignited fresh controversy with a series of provocative posts on social media, seemingly aimed at fellow Afrobeats superstar Davido. The heated exchange, which unfolded on Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter), saw Wizkid mocking Davido’s self-styled title of “001,” questioning his position outside of social media.
Wizkid, born Ayodeji Balogun, posted, “The only time u’re 001 is when u’re in your house. U’re not 001 of nothing but Instagram followers!” This pointed jab appeared to mock Davido’s popular moniker, used by his fans to celebrate his influence in the music industry.
The Afrobeats heavyweight went further, criticizing Davido’s entourage, accusing him of surrounding himself with financially dependent individuals. “Naija is a place the rich weaponize poverty so u carry all these broke boys in real life and get them visas so they worship u,” Wizkid wrote, implying that Davido uses his wealth and influence to control those around him.
Wizkid also took a swipe at Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is Davido’s uncle, known for his exuberant dance videos. He remarked, “When u see people wey dem papa and family train, u go know! U don’t see my uncle dancing online,” in what many see as a direct reference to Adeleke’s often-shared dance moves.
The exchange didn’t end there. Responding to claims that sportswear giant Puma paid Davido more for a brand deal, Wizkid fired back, “No! Puma is a big brand, but the budget they had for Africa wasn’t for me! Was cool for your client tho!” He clarified that he had turned down the offer, suggesting that Puma couldn’t meet his financial demands: “I turned down Puma cos they could no longer afford to pay me cos I wanted more!”
In another fiery post, Wizkid addressed criticism from Nelson Epega, founder and CEO of Chatter, who had earlier called him an “uncontrollable psychopath” while praising Davido. Wizkid hit back, stating, “First off, you can’t afford me fool! You are doing business with the right person you can afford!”
Wizkid didn’t hold back in questioning Davido’s musical abilities and personal credibility, declaring, “You’re not as fly as me, can’t sing or make music like me, u don’t make more money than me.” He also took shots at Davido’s entourage, describing them as “broke” and criticizing his lawyer as a “dumb ass.”
The intense social media outburst has reignited the long-standing rivalry between the two Afrobeats stars, sparking widespread debate and controversy across various platforms. Fans and observers alike are closely watching how both stars handle this latest feud, which continues to fuel speculation about the future of their relationship within Nigeria’s vibrant music scene.
