Ogbodo revealed that the government has ordered a full-scale investigation into the activities of the Oriokpa masquerade groups and vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable. He stated that Governor Peter Mbah has directed the affected communities’ leaders to meet with him on Friday, emphasizing that any further misconduct by the masqueraders will be met with strict sanctions.
The violence, which took place earlier this week, adds to a series of incidents involving the Oriokpa masquerades, including a widely condemned attack on a female nurse in April. On September 19, hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona in Nsukka protested against the repeated attacks and harassment by these masqueraders.
The commissioner conveyed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, warning that it would not tolerate any further excesses from the masquerade groups or any other individuals.
