Renowned Nigerian Islamic singer, Rukayat Gawat Oyefeso, has passed away and will be buried today, Tuesday, in Ijebu Aiyepe, Ogun State. The news of her death was initially reported by PUNCH Online, with further confirmation from YAYI TV, a prominent Islamic channel on social media.
Solatul Janazah (the Islamic funeral prayer) was observed earlier in Ojota, Lagos State, as seen through a TikTok live broadcast. The final rites and burial will take place at noon today in Ijebu Aiyepe.
Rukayat Gawat was widely recognized for her beautiful voice and spiritual Islamic songs that resonated within the Muslim community. Her brother, Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), quoting a Quranic verse, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return” (Quran 2:156).
Rukayat recently marked the 12th anniversary of her father, Aremu Gawat’s disappearance. Aremu Gawat, a popular Islamic presenter and broadcaster, went missing in July 2012, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
Condolences have poured in from fans, colleagues, and the public as they mourn the loss of the beloved singer. May Allah grant her eternal peace.
