The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rains across various regions of the country from Wednesday to Friday. In a weather outlook released on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet warned of significant weather changes, advising residents to take necessary precautions against potential urban flooding and strong winds.
In the northern region, NiMet predicted thunderstorms during the morning hours on Wednesday over parts of Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kaduna States. As the day progresses, the thunderstorms are expected to affect Kano, Borno, Katsina, Adamawa, Kaduna, Taraba, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Jigawa States in the afternoon and evening.
For the North Central region, thunderstorms are forecast over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Niger States in the morning. These storms will likely extend to Benue, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara States later in the day.
In southern Nigeria, thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during Wednesday morning. Later, intermittent rains are expected to hit Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Oyo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.
NiMet also predicted that thunderstorms will persist in Taraba and Adamawa States on Thursday morning, with a likelihood of further storms over Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, and Taraba in the afternoon and evening.
In the North Central, rains are expected in Plateau and Benue States in the morning, followed by thunderstorms in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, and Benue States later in the day.
For the southern cities, intermittent rains are forecast over Enugu and Anambra in the morning, with more widespread showers affecting Ondo, Edo, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta States later on.
By Friday, thunderstorms are expected to continue over Adamawa and Taraba in the morning, spreading to Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Zamfara later in the day. North Central states, including Nasarawa and Niger, should expect morning rains, while localized thunderstorms may hit Kogi, FCT, Kwara, and Niger in the afternoon.
Southern cities will experience cloudy skies on Friday morning, with thunderstorms likely later in the day, particularly over inland areas, while intermittent rains are forecast for coastal regions.
NiMet warned residents in flood-prone areas to be vigilant as heavy downpours may trigger urban flooding, particularly in major cities. The agency also urged the public to remain informed through its regular updates and to follow safety advisories from relevant authorities.
“Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are expected. The public should take adequate precautions,” NiMet advised.
Airline operators were also encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure effective planning and operational safety.
