Sokoto, Nigeria – As Sokoto State prepares for its upcoming local government elections on September 21, 2024, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election across all 23 local government areas.
Addressing a crowd of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters during a campaign flag-off in Goronyo, Sokoto East Senatorial Zone, the governor called on the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reconsider its decision to boycott the polls.
Aliyu reminded the public that the Sokoto Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) officials were appointed under the previous PDP-led government, reassuring that he had not changed the structure. “I wonder why the PDP is afraid of participating in the elections organized by SIEC,” the governor remarked, asserting that the electoral body would conduct a transparent and credible election process.
“I had a meeting with the Chairman of SIEC, and he assured me of transparent elections. Whoever wins will be declared the winner,” Aliyu stated, calling on residents to turn out in large numbers to vote for the APC candidates, who he said will help sustain the state’s development trajectory.
During his address, the governor highlighted his administration’s achievements, including free provision of fertilizers and agricultural inputs for farmers, solar-powered streetlights, and the timely payment of workers’ salaries.
APC leader in the state, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, lauded Governor Aliyu’s performance within his first year in office. “Mr. Governor, we are very proud of you. You have made significant progress in all sectors of development in the state. Please continue the good work,” Wamakko said.
Other prominent speakers at the event included Deputy Governor Idris Gobir, who assured citizens that the government is working hard to tackle insecurity in Sokoto East, and Minister of Water and Sanitation, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, who praised the governor’s delivery of democratic dividends.
The event culminated in the symbolic presentation of party flags to APC candidates for the forthcoming local government elections by Senator Wamakko.
As the election day nears, all eyes are on Sokoto to see whether the PDP will reverse its decision and how the elections will unfold under Governor Aliyu’s administration.
