Ikole-Ekiti, Nigeria – Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has issued a stringent directive mandating all female students and staff on its Ikole campus to remain indoors from August 7th to 9th, 2024. The measure is in response to the impending Oro festival, a traditional Yoruba cultural event characterized by restrictions on women’s movement.
A statement from the registrar’s office, dated August 6th, underscored the university’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its female community members. The memo, signed by Senior Assistant Registrar Ibukunoluwa O. Alamu, emphasized the importance of adhering to the stay-indoors order during the Oro festival.
The Oro festival, a culturally significant event in many Yoruba communities, often involves masked men and limitations on women’s activities. FUOYE’s decision to impose a stay-indoors directive is a proactive step aimed at safeguarding the university’s female population from any potential disruptions or risks associated with the festival.
The university urges all affected individuals to strictly comply with the directive and prioritize their safety during the specified period.
