The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command has initiated a show of force in preparation for the nationwide protests scheduled to begin on August 1.
Led by State Commandant Maku Olatunde, the operation began on Tuesday and involved a significant security presence throughout key areas in the state. The exercise, which started at the state command headquarters in Awka, covered major routes including Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Ziks Avenue, Regina Caeli Junction, Kwata Junction, and several others, culminating at the Head Bridge in Onitsha.
Olatunde stated that the show of force, which will continue until August 12, demonstrates the command’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment and preventing any potential disruptions. “This proactive measure aims to preempt and mitigate potential incidents of vandalism, breaches of peace, and lawlessness related to the upcoming protests,” he said.
The display of force is intended to underscore the NSCDC’s readiness to protect national assets and infrastructure. Olatunde emphasized that the coordinated effort with other security agencies sends a strong message of preparedness to address any attempts to undermine security by those posing as protesters.
He cautioned youths against being manipulated into violent actions and urged the public to cooperate with security forces and report any suspicious activities. Additionally, Olatunde warned NSCDC officers against unprofessional conduct, stressing the importance of exercising caution, avoiding confrontations, and prioritizing de-escalation techniques to ensure a peaceful outcome.
The NSCDC’s actions reflect heightened security measures in anticipation of the forthcoming protests and the need to maintain public safety.
