Brawl Erupts Between Uruguay Players and Colombian Fans After Copa America Semi-Final
Charlotte, NC — Chaos ensued at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on Wednesday night as Liverpool star Darwin Nunez and other Uruguay players clashed with Colombian fans following Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat in the Copa America semi-final.
The altercation began when Nunez leapt into the spectator seating area and unleashed a flurry of punches at Colombian supporters. The situation quickly escalated, involving several Uruguay players who jumped into the stands to protect their family members and loved ones.
Uruguay central defender Jose Maria Gimenez explained that the players acted out of concern for their families. “This is a disaster. Our family was in danger. We had to go to the stands to take out our loved ones, with tiny newborn babies,” the Atletico Madrid player said. He criticized the lack of security, adding, “There was not a single police officer… I hope those who are organizing this are a little more careful with the families. Every game it’s been happening because there are people who don’t know how to handle a couple of drinks.”
The majority of the crowd supported Colombia, and there was no segregation between the fans of the two teams. The tension led to several Uruguay players, prominently Nunez, climbing into the crowd to protect their supporters.
The fighting continued for several minutes until police intervened. Ugly scenes also unfolded on the field after the final whistle, with players and staff from both teams involved in a mass melee in the center circle.
CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation that organizes the Copa America, condemned the incidents in a statement. “CONMEBOL strongly condemns any acts of violence that affect football. Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values. There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the pitch. We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into cheering on their national teams and having an unforgettable party.”
